Mat Hale started his career working as an assistant in Fashion Photography. His interest in the moving image was the logical progression, with many years working as an assistant on Commercials, Music Video and Feature Films. During this time he had always shot his own work, both still and moving, and more recently worked on live shows and tours as a camera operator.
In 2003 he was dragged down to The Place evening school and discovered to his surprise the joy of contemporary dance. His MA in Scenography (Dance) completed in 2006 at Laban, under the tutelage of Ross Cameron was the next logical step in his career, fusing his love of movement, film, photography and design.
Much, though by no means all, of his recent work looks at and embraces how we convey dynamic emotion and narrative through non – verbal means.
His Lighting Design work includes working with Etta Ermini for Resolutions! at The Place and the ICA, SAP Dance for Firsts at The Royal Opera House and Jelka Milic for The Place Prize 2008.
His current photographic and film portfolio includes a body of work with the Choreographer Thomas Noone, a stop frame film with the Dancer and Choreographer Nathaniel Parchment and work with Mongoose Cricket.
